What Are Fields?

Fields are the extra components you can customize for each Lasso display in WordPress. They control what shows up in your display and help with both functionality and design.

A Field could be a rating, a list of pros, a product's dimensions - you name it!

They were built to be incredibly flexible, so you can create the ones that make the most sense for you.

🌡 NOTE: Fields are only available with Lasso paid plans. Want to use Fields but are currently using Lasso Lite? Upgrade today!

Preset Fields: Pros, Cons, and Ratings

Lasso preloads a few popular Field options by default:

  • Pros: Short bullet points highlighting the best features or reasons to buy.

  • Cons: Short bullet points listing drawbacks or limitations.

  • Primary Rating: A star rating from 1 to 5 (with single decimal points supported, like 4.1).

Types of Fields

Lasso has several Field options you can use to create your own custom Fields:

  • Short Text: Concise, text-based comparisons

  • Long Text: Longer, text-based comparisons

  • Number: Only numerical values are allowed

  • Rating: Star ratings from 0.0 to 5.0

  • Bulleted List: Shows each element on its own line with a bullet symbol

  • Numbered List: Shows each element on its own line with a number

You can see an example of each Field in the image below:

How to Add Fields to Your Displays

It only takes a few steps to add Fields to your Lasso Displays!

1. Go to the Link Details page for your desired product and click Add Custom Field.

2. That will bring up a pop-up window to either Create new or Add from library.

3. To create a new Field, all you need is a few pieces of information:

  • Field Title: The name of the Field, which will show in all your Displays.

  • Field Type: Determines how you can format your Fields.

  • Field Description: For internal use only. Used to remind yourself what the Field is for or when to use it.

Once you've added those, click the Create Field button. Your Field will be saved, and you can use it across all your Lasso Displays!

4. To add one of your existing Fields to your Lasso Display, or to add the new Field that you just created, click the Add from library tab.

There, you'll see a list of all of your available Fields. You can pick one, or you can search for it in the text box.

Choose the Field you'd like to add, and it will appear on your Link Details page.

5. Finally, customize your new Field in the box that appears.

6. Once you've customized your Field, click away from the Field (anywhere else on the page). Your new Field will show in the example Display in the top right corner.

You can then repeat the process for as many Fields as you'd like on each Display. The options are endless!

Why Should You Use Fields?

Before you can effectively compare products, you need to start saving the data by which you would compare those products. That's what you should think about when creating Fields for your products.

For example, you may want to compare products in your "Best Tools for Writers" post.

In this instance, you could have a Primary Rating Field and a Languages Supported Field for your Displays.

The best part? These Fields can also transfer to Comparison Tables, so you can easily reference the same attributes across multiple products.

Editing Fields and Changing the Name of Existing Fields

Want to update the name of a Field you created? Want to update the Pros, Cons, and Primary Rating default Field names to reflect your site's language?

You can change the name of your Fields anytime!

1. Navigate to the Fields tab in the lefthand sidebar of your Lasso WordPress plugin.

2. Click on the Field you'd like to update. In this example, we'll choose Pros.

3. The next page will show you all of the products where you use that Field. Click on the Details tab.

4. Type the new name of your Field in the Field Title box.

5. Click Save Changes at the bottom of the page, and you're all set!
