We often get asked why is Lasso creating lots of 302 redirects?
Lasso creates lots of 302 redirects for all of your cloaked affiliate links created in Lasso.
This is because a 302 redirect is a "temporary" redirect which is ideal for affiliated product links since the final destination could change at any time due to being out-of-stock, no longer available, or switching to a different retailer.
We don't use the 301 redirect because generally a 301 is followable and indexable, whereas we don't actually want your cloaked affiliate links to be indexable.
By default, Lasso will always nofollow
and noindex
your cloaked affiliate links via this toggle in Lasso > Settings > General:
Note: There could be other reasons why cloaked links are being followed, indexed, or showing in your sitemap—usually because of your SEO plugin. Read our article, Removing Lasso from your Sitemap to know the best way to set up your sitemap with Lasso links.
Ahrefs Site Health Reports Redirect Warnings
If you use Ahrefs webmaster tools for Site Audit and Site Health, you might get regular warnings that your site is using many redirects either as "3XX redirect" or "302 redirect:"
But 302 redirects created by Lasso is completely normal if you are using link cloaking.
Redirect warnings appearing in an Ahrefs Site Audit isn't necessarily a bad thing, it's just the tool following all links found on pages and reporting what it finds.
Many 302 or 301 redirects could be a cause for concern for SEO site health in some cases, but for your Lasso cloaked affiliate links it is completely normal.
Here's an example of what you might see, notice these affiliate links are kept behind a /recommends/
prefix for link cloaks:
None of these are an issue with your site's SEO because they are there for a purpose.
